Garry Flitcroft has a hunch that while Manchester United can win the championship Manchester City can go on and grab FA Cup glory.
City’s latest discovery was outstanding as a stand-in centre half against the lethal finishing qualities of Les Ferdinand.
Flitcroft, who will pledge himself to City with a new three-year deal this week, said “We can live with United and feel no pressure while they are going so well. Perhaps this cup success can be the platform for us to go on and do things. I was loaned out to Bury for 12 months and it was there I played as a central defender for the first time. But I a midfield player and my ambition is to fight for a place in that department.”
Flitcroft paid tribute to veterans Steve McMahon for guiding him through the formative years of his career. He said “Steve talks me through matches, encourages me and allows me to go forward.”

In turn, McMahon, who returned from suspension to play a prominent role in City’s success, describes Flitcroft as a player of enormous potential.
McMahon recalled how Asa Hartford had guided him through the early stages of his career at Everton and said “I know what it is like to be starting out and I try and help Gary as much as I can. I try to get him going. He came into the side at centre-half at the last minute and showed he has a great talent. He has the potential to become a very good player and he is the type that will learn. Player-manager Peter Read admitted that City made a “sloppy start” but Niall Quinn played a major part in the vital opening strike after 71 minutes. Mike Sheron linked up well and David White blasted his 13th goal of the season.
Five minutes later Quinn headed on at the near post, White’s diving header was blocked but Dutch defender Michael Vonk swept the loose ball home.
White then controversially celebrated the goal with a number of City fans who invaded the pitch. After limping back over the halfway line White crashed to the ground and Rangers’ skipper Alan MacDonald was so incensed at what he considered to be time wasting that he got himself booked.
McDonald continued the argument until Ferdinand hauled him away.
Ian Holloway grabbed a last-gasp goal for Rangers but Gerry Francis’ side never looked like overcoming the loss of Ray Wilkins.
