BILL MILLS WRITING IN THE SUNDAY MIRROR 20TH JANUARY 1991
Angry Dave Bassett stormed out of Maine Road last night in a row over referee David Ellery.
United skipper Vinnie Jones was sent off and Simon Tracey, David Barnes and Billy Whitehurst were booked in a bad tempered defeat.
“We shall be making a complaint about Mr Ellery,” said the United boss. “We had problems with him last season.”
The game was only five seconds old when hard man Jones clattered into Reid. But when Jones later made another heavy tackle on City’s player-boss he was sent off. Barnes escaped a similar fate after felling David White on a clear run. He got away with a yellow card.
Tracey too was lucky when he handled outside the box as White tried to clip the ball over him. He was only booked. But there was nothing lucky about City’s, 19th minute lead, Reid beat Jones and passed to White, whose cross was tucked in by Mark Ward.
And minutes from time United were sunk by Ward’s curling shot into the top corner.
