‘JUDAS’ ATTACK ON KENDALL

KEN LAWRENCE WRITING IN THE DAILY MIRROR 14TH JANUARY 1991
Howard Kendall was yesterday forced to sit through an astonishing hate campaign, but still finished with the last laugh.
Furious Manchester City fans, bitter at Kendall’s return to his first love, Everton, 68 days ago, spent the whole of their sides match at Goodison hurling abuse at the man they called “Judas.”
Several giant banners proclaimed the City supporters’ contempt for the Goodison manager, one, which read “You have to be loyal, youou fucking Judas,” was confiscated by police.
Another read “Even my cat hates Kendall.” And throughout the TV showdown the big City contingent continually yelled: “If you hate Howard Kendall clap your hands.” But goals from Peter Beagrye and Kevin Sheedy meant that Kendall emerged triumphant after putting one over on Peter Reid, the man who took over from him as player-boss at City.
Kendall said afterwards: “It’s nice to be loved, isn’t it? A lot of things have been said and I suppose that what happened today was only to be expected. But it was not nice to hear especially when so much of it, the banners and all, was inaccurate.” Reid, who makes no secret of his friendship with Kendall, the City manager was his assistant at Maine Road, admitted: “Some of the City fans still feel a bit bitter towards Howard. After what happened in November. But after what he did for me by taking me to City and after what he did for the club I can only feel admiration for him.”
Kendall’s inspirational qualities have now taken Everton to five successive wins and he said: “This was probably our best display since I returned to the club. Winning breeds confidence as it did at City towards the end of last season when they proved what a good side they are.
Make no mistake, they are a good side but we had a good day. We were very convincing.
Beagrie’s opener, his first for the club in 31 appearances, produced a spectacular double somersault, from the £750,000 winger and Kendall Jonked: “He must have been practising that flip at home.”
City were hampered by a virus outbreak among some of the players and Reid, who has now lost four of his last five League games, revealed: Gary Megson was the worst hit. He had to be taken off because he was running a temperature.” City also suffered injuries to Colin Hendry and Steve Redmond.
