George Graham left Maine Road fuming, despite watching his Arsenal team extend their unbeaten run to 21 matches with a single goal win over Manchester City. Graham complained bitterly about an article in City’s programme cataloguing disciplinary disasters encountered by the Highbury club over the last two years.
Among incidents listed were the fining of Graham himself by the club, punishment handed out to Paul Merson and Steve Bould after an alleged hotel room rumpus, Arsenal’s stormy tour to Singapore, the pitch brawls in matches against Norwich and Manchester United and the jailing of Tony Adams.
“These programme notes are disgraceful,” snapped Graham. “I’m extremely annoyed that such things can go in a programme. They would not be allowed at Highbury. Consolation for Graham came with confirmation that Arsenal are still chief rivals for Liverpool’s title following the defeat of Crystal Palace at Aston Villa.
