A REPORT BY JOHN MADDOCKS FROM THE CITY MAGAZINE JANUARY 1996
… The Blues had that little bit of luck at Chelsea as the home side could have had three goals before they even scored. Dennis Wise hit a post; Dixon had a shot blocked; then the same player wasted a header over the bar.
However, City looked dangerous on the break and Beasant, in goal for the home team, finger-tipped a shot off the bar for a corner.
It was always going to be interesting to see how Clive Allen would fare, having arrived at Stamford Bridge a month earlier, and he rose to the occasion, accepting Wise’s pass, getting in behind Keith Curle, and cracking the ball past Andy Dibble for his fourth goal in six games.
But the Blues kept pegging away, and just when it seemed all was lost, in came the hero of the hour, Mike Sheron, on for Adrian Heath. He tried a pot in a crowded penalty area, the ball ricocheted off two players and finished up nestling in the back of Beasant’s net.
