ROB BEASLEY WRITING IN THE SUNDAY TRIBUNE 15TH DECEMBER 1991
Substitute Dennis Bailey’s, last minute equaliser prevented City from ending their abysmal home record. City,
Who had not won at Maine Road since October 26 went in at half time with a two goal lead but then contrived to throw away the chance of making up ground on Leeds. Northern Ireland youngster Michael Hughes, yesterday named as Barclay’s North-west region, “young eagle” of the month, celebrated in style. His cross-field pass set up the first goal for David White in the 13th minute, and he was also the architect of the second.
Hughes was brought down after a stunning 25th minute run and referee Keith Cooper pointed to the spot. Steve Redmond’s penalty was saved but Keith Curle crashed home the rebound.
But City went to pieces in the second half and Roy Wegerle reduced the arrears with a 54th minute goal.
Then two minutes from time, Rangers were awarded a penalty but Tony Coton saved Wegerle’s kick.
Rangers. however, would not be denied and Bailey forced home Ray Wilkins corner.
