MATCH REPORT FROM THE MANCHESTER CITY OFFICIAL HANDBOOK 1992/93
City arrived at Ayresome Park on the back of an impressive away record. Injuries had depleted Peter Reid’s squad but the City line-up still boasted potential match-winners.
In the first-half the only problem for City, indeed for both teams, was the thick fog which drifted in off the North Sea. Before it blew away, it threatened to interrupt the game, taking with it the Blues’ Cup aspirations much to the consternation of City’s big following.
Middlesbrough’s first goal had a strong hint of off-side about it with nearly an hour gone, but in any case City’s defensive response looked jaded.
Mid-way through the second-half ‘Boro went two up and City sent on substitutes Sheron and Allen in a bid to survive. Three minutes from time David White’s header gave brief hope but City could not capitalise and were out of the competition.
