MATCH REPORT FROM THE SUNDAY TRIBUNE 3RD NOVEMBER 1991
Niall Quinn’s Seventh goal of the season set Manchester City on the way to their fifth away win, but the Republic of Ireland International’s day was ruined when he had to be carried off with a leg injury seven minutes after scoring.
The City striker’s retiral compounds Irish manager Jack Charlton’s preparations for Wednesday week’s match in Istanbul, against Turkey, with his midfield division already devastated by injury.
Quinn was on target in the 10th minute when player-manager Peter Reid beat the Southampton offside trap with a neat free kick to find the striker in space. Quinn took the ball on his chest and beat goalkeeper Tim flowers with a close range right foot shot.
In the 17th minute Quinn was helped off clutching his left shin and was replaced by makeshift Centre-forward. Colin Hendry, who proved just as much of a handful. Hendry got the vital flick in the 47th minute which allowed Mike Sheron to add City’s second. Then substitute John Gittens added an own goal in the 59th minute.
