JIM RODGER WRITING IN THE DAILY MIRROR 6TH AUGUST 1979
Malcolm Allison was unworried about his side’s shattering 3-1 defeat by Coventry in the Edinburgh four club Skol tournament.
And without blushes or outcry he told me bluntly: “the results in this tournament don’t mean a thing to me. I regard them as warm-up matches, before the real competition gets underway.”
Allison is not letting anything worry him in his bid to reshape the Maine Road side with his multi-million pound face-lift.
He praised his two young players, Mick Robinson and Steve MacKenzie adding: “Robinson will play for England one day.”
But Allison admitted his side didn’t deserve to win and is looking for a marked improvement against Hibs tonight and Hearts on Wednesday.
It was the unknown Tommy English, Coventry’s 18 year old striker deputising for injured Scottish international Ian Wallace, who stole the show with two great goals to win the £100 man-of-the-match award.
Coventry’s other scorer was Mick Ferguson, with Tommy Caton netting for Manchester City.
