Chris Garlands winner halted City’s 17 match unbeaten run in it’s tracks.
But it was Norman Hunter who was the star of the show after an almost faultless display, his chipped free kick allowed Garland to hammer home the only goal of the game from 8 yards.

Was at this game with my dad and brother we travelled up from Budleigh Salterton Devon were we lived for five or six years for the game we lost but what a side that was we bossed the game I remember.. Been to Bristol city away from Rochdale when we moved back North in late seventies… the game was either in the early eighties or late seventies A 2-2 Draw around Xmas/ New year I think bloody cold I know that much… !   2. was at that game….traveled down from rochdale with yelloway coaches…..i was in the open end behind the goal dont know if it was a mixed end or a lot of blues got into there end but when garland scored that goal it all kicked off…… remember seeing a punk rocker with the chain from his nose to his ear ripped out and a man city fan with a canvas laundry bag full of half charilies (house bricks)……good old football away days…..
