FROM FRANCIS LEE, TRIUMPH, TREACHERY AND TOILET ROLLS
.. The Belgian game has come on in leaps and bounds in recent decades but back in 1970, this was the poorest side we would face in the Cup Winners’ Cup. We faced them in November and we certainly let off a few fireworks in their defence. We went to their place first and beat them 3-0. It was all over by half-time, in truth, and I bagged myself a couple to put us two up in 35 minutes. Colin Bell set me up for the first and the two of us would have some fun in the opening 45 minutes. My second came after Neil Young had intercepted a poor pass and sent me clear for an easy finish. Then a minute from half-time, I escaped some close attention on the touchline and crossed for Belly to hit a low drive through a crowded area and beat keeper Engelen. it was too easy and, frankly, we eased up after that.
A GOAL FOR COLIN BELL
England men Francis Lee and Colin Bell gave Manchester City a substantial 3-0 lead in the first leg of the European Cup Winners Cup second round tie with Lierse (Belgium) here tonight.
City opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Bell headed to Lee, who kicked high over the goalkeeper’s outstretched hands. City had several good chances but threw them away. But after 35 minutes Young intercepted a bad pass on the wing and pushed the ball to Lee. He raced round a defender and scored.
One of the best moves of the match came in the 44th minute when Lee was crowded to the touchline, danced round an opponent and centred for Bell to slam in a low shot through a crowded goalmouth.
Heslop, replacing Doyle injured in the 37th minute, brought down Janssens just outside the penalty area shortly after the restart. It was probably Lierse`s best chance and goalkeeper Corrigan did well to save the free kick.
Lierse, gamely trying to keep the match alive, also lost a leading player, Vermeyen. But his substitute came near to scoring when Corrigan deflected his shot
