MATCH REPORT FROM THE SUNDAY WORLD (DUBLIN) 19TH APRIL 1992
A goal by Neil Pointon in only the second minute put City in control from the start and hammered another nail into West Ham’s relegation coffin.
Pointon won the ball in midfield and stormed forward to fire in a left foot shot which Ludek Miklosko failed to hold and the ball trickled over the line.
It was the defender’s first goal of the season and only his second for the club.
West Ham should have equalised in the fifth minute but Stuart Slater shot wide with only Tony Coton to beat.
Steve McMahon came close to increasing City’s lead in the 18th minute, firing in a powerful shot from 20 yards which brought a great save from Miklosko.
The Hammers pressed for an equaliser and gained a free kick just outside the penalty area, where Michel Vonk fouled Slater, but the chance came to nothing.
Vonk again slipped up when he tried to chest the ball back to his goalkeeper, Mike Small spotted the opening and it took a drive at his feet from Coton to clear the danger.
McMahon shot well wide before a last-ditch tackle by Julian Dicks halted another dangerous attack as City began to take control again.
The visitors set up the first attack after the interval when Tim Breacker headed a free kick over the City bar.
Pointon beat the Hammers defence with a high cross which found David White but City’s leading scorer blasted the ball way off target.
Then Miklosko foiled Mike Hughes, when he raced from his goal to block the City striker’s attempt.
Wayne Clark put City 2-0 ahead after 77 minutes.
