It was a very uninspiring first 75 minutes at Upton Park, with very few chances from either side, although City were the team on the front foot throughout the match.
The deadlock was finally broken with less than a quarter of an hour left. Niall Quinn’s shot had beaten Ludek Miklosko and was goal-bound, however, Colin Foster raised his left arm and palmed the ball over the bar. Referee, Mr Barratt immediately pointed to the penalty spot, but also produced the red card to Foster to reduce the Hammers to ten men. The job of taking the spot kick was given to Steve Redmond, and despite slipping as he struck the ball, it looped over the diving Miklosko into the net.
However, within five minutes West Ham equalised with a great finish by Ken Brown from six yards after a cross from Slater.
City didn’t settle for just a point. And in the last minute, a massive punt upfield from Tony Coton was completely missed by two West Ham defenders in the box and 70th minute substitute Colin Hendry pounced to hit a low, but weak shot from 12 yards which should have been kept out by the Hammers’ custodian, however he could only push the ball into the net, and City had all the points to take back to Manchester.
Quinn, on speaking about the penalty after the game said: “I felt very sorry for Foster, I had a great clean battle with him all afternoon and it was such a shame for it to finish like that. The sending off took the edge off the win for me, neither of us could say we’d got the better of the other. But rules are rules and you can’t argue with them. If he’d stayed on, he might have got the winner!”
