Big Niall Quinn finally broke through Saints’ dogged rearguard to set up a dramatic winner for Mike Sheron.
It came in the 74th minute at a moment when, for the first time in a rugged battle, previously solid Southampton had suddenly lost both their nerve and their temper.

In two nasty clashes just before the goal both Hurlock and Dowie were booked for headstrong fouls and City came in for the kill.
Holden crossed from the left and Quinn rose high to crack a tremendous header against the underside of the bar. Before it could be booted clear Sheron fired the ball past helpless Flowers.
It was cruel luck for the gallant Saints keeper who only minutes before had somehow managed to turn a vicious close-range drive from Sheron just round the post.
It was a real battle from the start on a waterlogged pitch that often turned passes into a complete lottery as the ball stuck in the water.
Saints boss Ian Branfood said: “I feel the game should not have been played but it’s difficult for the ref when there are a lot of people in the ground waiting to see the game. You just couldn’t play any football on a pitch like that.
