PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 1ST AUGUST 1989
Manchester City players today received more than a few frosty glances from their angry manager as they flew 1,000 miles north and beyond the Arctic Circle for the toughest test of a six-game Norwegian fitness-proving mission.
Mel Machin was seething after the Blues had come within three minutes of defeat at the hands of Third Division Oslo-Grei, who at one stage held an embarrassing 3-1 lead last night.
… The Blues boss stormed: “…I wasn’t at all happy. We gave away sloppy goals. The players should know by now that against this standard of opposition, I will not tolerate a slapdash approach.”
… City, with the first half 4-4-2 formation, where a goal up after eight minutes when hotshot Allen scored his eighth goal so far with a near post strike from Nigel Gleghorn’s cross.
… The home side equalised six minutes later through Geir Odegard and then took a 74th minute lead through Steiner Enesty, who then set up the third for Rune Erickson.
City rallied with David Oldfield scoring after 84 minutes and Wayne Biggins sliding in the late equaliser three minutes later, both from White crosses.
