HENRY MATTHEWS WRITING IN THE SUNDAY MIRROR 3RD MAY 1992
Hat-trick hero David White sent a timely reminder to England boss Graham Taylor as he puts the finishing touches to his European Championship strategy.
White’s three-goal blast took his season’s tally to 21, and surely the time has come when he no longer goes along for the England squad for the ride.
But the 25 year old City star said “I’ve got a feeling I might have left it too late. l had a good start to the season and a good Christmas but then let myself down a bit. But it’s nice to get a hat-trick on the final day of the season.”
… It was a nightmare for John Keely in his League debut for Oldham after two seasons as John Hallworth’s understudy.
Oldham’s only bright spot came after 13 minutes when Nick Henry swept the ball home from Paul Bernard’s cross.
From then on it was downhill as the defence fell apart.
City boss Peter Reid said “My players’ reaction after going a goal down was tremendous.”
Adrian Mike, 18, in his second League game, grabbed the equaliser after 17 minutes, and White got his first with a header from Ian Brightwell’s flick on.
White had two bites at the cherry before poking in his second, but rounded off his treble with a crisp drive.
City’s other goal came from Mike Sheron, while sub Paul Moulden got Oldham’s second just before the end.
White left without the traditional match ball souvenir. He explained Alan Gunn was refereeing the last match of his career. I was only too happy to hand to him.
