PETER BALL WRITING IN THE TIMES 11TH APRIL 1991
Niall Quinn can do no wrong. The scorer of the Republic of Ireland’s goal at Wembley last month continued in Rich vein for his club, scoring his fifth in three matches as Manchester City gained their third successive win to move level on points with their neighbours.
That made it an imposing day for Manchester, even if City’s triumph was rather less significant. It did however, do serious damage to Leed’s ambitions of qualifying for Europe, giving Peter Reid some satisfaction after Leed’s win at Maine Road had marred his first match as manager.
Reid had to watch last night, but the absentee who was more badly missed was Gordon Strachan of Leeds.
Quinn played an important role in City taking the lead after 25 minutes. He rose above Lukic to meet Hill’s free kick and head the ball goalwards. Whyte guided it to safety, but the reprieve was only temporary as Quinn flicked on Brennan’s corner for Hill to score.
Six minutes before the interval Coton did well to parry Chapman’s point blank header but was helpless as Speed returned the ball for McAllister to equalise.
Eleven minutes from time Quinn lost his marker to meet Brennan’s deep centre with a downward header for his 19th club goal of the season.
