MATCH REPORT FROM SUNDAY LIFE 18TH AUGUST 1991
Niall Quinn, Manchester City’s top scorer last season, started the new campaign in style with a first half goal which settled a frenzied match.
Four players were booked in the opening six minutes, and for a time the game threatened to get out of referee David Ellery’s control.
But it settled down in the 16th minute when Quinn slipped away from his marker Andy Pearce for the only occasion in the match.
Mark Brennan’s left-wing Centre sailed high over the goalmouth and Quinn, perfectly positioned at the far post, headed back across goal and inside the post.
City could have been three up but for a one-handed saved by Ogrizovic and a miscue by Quinn.
Then Coventry battled back and almost equalised when teenage goalkeeper Martyn Margetson pushed Mickey Gynn’s shot across goal and Stewart Robson fired against a post.
