Manchester City went down 1-0 against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park as Mike Newell scored in the 69th minute.
The Blues had looked like holding out for a point as Keith Curle kept record Rovers’ signing Alan Shearer in a vice-like grip.
Earlier Niall Quinn, who starts a three-match ban next week, and Rick Holden were the dangermen for City.
