City, captained by Paul Power, took the field at Plough Lane expecting victory in front of Wimbledon's biggest league attendance since they became a league side. Fifteen minutes later they were reeling after goals from Stewart Evans and Glyn Hodges gave the home side a two goal lead. City's team included new boys Tony Cunningham and David Phillips. Phillips, whose arrival seemed perfect from an advertisers point of view as the club had recently agreed a £250,000 sponsorship deal with electrical company Philips. On the pitch Phillips helped City fight back and by half-time the Blues had pulled a goal back, and they levelled early in the second. It was a gritty performance by both teams, described by The Don's manager Dave Bassett as "A bloody good game!"
