...An 81st minute goal set up by Joe Cole, nearly forced home by substite Don Hutchison and then stabbed in by Frederic Kanoute, may not be enough to retain a Premiership place conservatively estimated to be worth £20 Million. ... For much of those first 80 minutes West Ham had been going in the same direction they have for much of the season : backwards. Manchester City had enough possession to have plunged the dagger into West Ham's fast sinking reputation as a traditional home of attractive play.
