JOHN MADDOCKS WRITING IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 29TH OCTOBER 1988 Another 2-2 draw, this time against West Brom, followed the one at Bolton. Paul Futcher replaced the injured Watson, and Channon returned after a hamstring problem. City twice took a lead only to see it wiped out by enterprising play. The opening goal came from Channon after 16 minutes but Regis took advantage of Corrigan parrying a Robson free-kick four minutes later, hooking majestically over the tall City ‘keeper.

Both the other goals came before the break. With four minutes to go, Asa Hartford scored with a rare volley, but the Baggies hit back through Robson, Alistair Brown and Regis having softened up the Blues’ defence with fierce efforts. The game bubbled with skill and artistry, and despite Corrigan’s admission that he had had a poor game, nobody pointed fingers at the City ‘keeper as a potential scapegoat.
