REPORT FROM SUNDAY LIFE 15TH APRIL 1990 Manchester City moved to within site of safety from relegation zone thanks to a stroke of fortune in their game against Sheffield Wednesday at Maine Road. For City's 77th minute winner owed everything to a slice of look. David White burst down the right and saw his shot blocked in the Wednesday box. The ball ran free to City substitute Adrian Heath, whose shot went into the net off the arm of Wednesday, Defender Peter Shirtliff. Wednesday themselves looking for First Division safety, were unlucky not to take a point out of the game. City had taken the lead in the 22nd minute when Eire International striker Niall Quinn scored with a sweet shot from Mark Ward's cross. Wednesday equalised in the 69th minute as David Hurst prodded home a Trevor Francis cross from close range. City manager Howard Kendall said: "We would have settled for fourth from bottom place. But now we are trying to finish as high as possible If we can win at Norwich tomorrow and the results go with us we could be safe." Kendall will be without England under 21 player Paul Lake at Carrow Road. He went off at half time with a back strain. Wednesday boss Ron Atkinson said: "In terms of performance and commitment we played well. When you give a good performance you expect something.
