City threatened to ruin United's day as late in the first half Jimmy Munro hit a 20 yard shot past Crompton to make it 1-0 to City. City's dominance continued into the second half but the nearest they came to increasing their lead was an Andy Black header that hit the United crossbar. However against the run of play United grabbed two late goals to snatch victory. In a hard fought game fighting broke out between Billy Linacre and Henry Cockburn with just two minutes to go and they were both sent off.
