This was the first time the clubs had met in a cup tie. Unfortunately the game was spoilt by bad weather conditions, snow lay on an icy pitch as 2nd Division Liverpool held out for a replay. City missed some excellent scoring chances, and Liverpool were also unlucky with a Billy Liddel goal being controversially ruled offside.
