JEFF HODGSON WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 2ND DECEMBER 1989 Rock-bottom Manchester City slumped 4-1 against League leaders Liverpool at Maine Road. Sorry City, without a hope, were given a lesson by the Mersey masters. And the Blues fans showed their feelings near the end with chants "Swales out" ringing round the ground. City driven on by star man Paul Lake, showed some resistance in the first half even though they trailed to an eighth goal from Ian Rush. But Liverpool had City on the rack in the second half with further goals from Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and Ian Rush. In between Clive Allen pulled a goal back with a penalty.
