PETER GARDNER'S 'VERDICT' IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 9TH APRIL 1977 It was an uphill battle for City all the way at Anfield today. The Blues were made to soak up enormous pressure from the powerful Liverpool side relentlessly surging on to soccer's magic triple crown. And City were not helped by injuries which robbed them of the services of Joe Royle after 50 minutes. Despite all the handicaps City showed outstanding courage and character. The attacking effort from the Blues was minimal however. ... But battling Brian Kidd scored his third goal in two days to get fighting City back on terms, but jubilation lasted no more than a minute as Steve Heighway restored Liverpool's lead.
