City went into the game with a very inexperienced forward line of Paul Simpson, full debutant Darren Beckford and Steve Kinsey as both Jim Melrose and Gordon Smith were unavailable through injury. With Clive Wilson also injured things got worse for Billy McNeill when Graham Baker broke his leg in a tackle with Neil Aspin. The first half was full of half chances but City took the advantage five minutes after the break. Jim Tolmie who had replaced the unfortunate Baker converted a penalty, after Linighan had handled in the box, and City were 1-0 up. The lead only lasted 14 minutes, as Ian Baird equalised with a header from a Lorimer cross. City surged forward in the hunt for a winner but Mervyn Day made some excellent saves to keep them at bay and it was left to Scott Sellars to snatch all the points for Leeds as he curled in a 77th minute winner.
