FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 14TH APRIL 1990 Manager Billy McNeill was forced to ring the changes for the visit to Grimsby Town, with disastrous results. Nicky Reid took over from Baker, Clements reappeared in the back four, and Tolmie replaced Beckford. Kinsey should have beaten Felgate early on but finished tamely. A goal would have boosted Blue confidence but the miss only increased Grimsby's. Drinkell opened the scoring by finishing off Hine's centre and City brought on Beckford for Lomax at the interval. Lund then put a brace of goals past Williams, making Clements and McCarthy look like novices in the process. Paul Simpson, the only real threat to Grimsby, volleyed home a consolation goal after 71 minutes but even this was wiped out six minutes from the end by Cumming. There remained a mere five games in which to get the train back on the tracks and to push ahead towards Division One.
