Big Joe Corrigan was clearly City's man of the match, however his brilliance between the sticks couldn't mask a performance that Peter Gardner of the Manchester Evening News described as "pathetic" and a "Manchester City horror show." Everton scored through Connolly in the 19th minute and could have finished with a hat-full of goals if it wasn't for the magnificent display of City's custodian and also the woodwork, which denied them twice. The Toffee's goal came when a great shot by Harvey was brilliantly saved by Corrigan, however Joe could only parry the ball, and Connolly was on hand to tap it into the net.
