FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 2ND JANUARY 1988 Boxing Day saw City at Goodison taking on the League leaders Everton, whose first League defeat of the season had occurred the previous Saturday. City had only gained 4 points from the previous 18, yet played much better football than their League position indicated. Barnes almost notched the first goal after 8 minutes when he beat Wood only to see the ball rebound from a post for Higgins to clear. Channon brought good saves from the Everton ‘keeper and it looked as though City were gaining the upper hand The Blues received a severe blow in the 50th minute when Hartford was injured, Palmer substituting, but then Everton lost full-back Jones with an elbow dislocation. The only goal fell to the Merseysiders with 18 minutes left. Corrigan could only push away a Wright free-kick to Latchford. Big Joe did well to block the latter‘s shot but Wright hit in the rebound.
