City were lucky to go down just 4-1 on a night when Chelsea were rampant on a rain sodden Stamford Bridge pitch. Without the suspended Mick McCarthy, replacement Andy May was put to the sword by Chelsea hat-trick hero Kerry Dixon, who's first was a close range shot from a Speedie cross, and his second a far post header, and so Chelsea led 2-0 at the break but could easily have been four or five up, as they were denied by some excellent Alex William's saves and a goal-line clearance from Clive Wilson. After the break the Chelsea barrage continued and Dixon headed in again to claim his and Chelsea's third, and shortly after Cannoville made it four. With half an hour to go Pat Nevin failed to make it 5-0 as he couldn't convert a penalty and it was left to Gordon Smith to grab a consolation for City after good work on the wing by Clive Wilson.
