FROM AN ARTICLE BY JOHN MADDOCKS, PUBLISHED IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 23RD SEPTEMBER 1989 At the outset of unsettling talk of Hibernian's declared interest in having Billy McNeill as their manager, City went off to Cardiff and added three valuable points to their promotion collection with a decisive 3-0 victory. The Welsh team were no match for our determined Blues, Smith giving us the lead 5 minutes after the break from a Reid corner, the entire move seemingly engineered by Cardiff as they doggedly played the ball backwards from midfield. Smith then set up our second goal, Cunningham rising unchallenged to head past ‘keeper Plumley. It was the Jamaican’s 50th goal in 200 League games. With 19 minutes left Kinsey's good footwork set up Clive Wilson to make it 3-0, a quite predictable result the way the Blues played on the day.
