Joe Mercer kept his promise to start with the Cup winning team to the delight of about 6,000 fans packed into the small Oval ground. It was a leisurely first 20 minutes, with City mostly on the attack, but all they could muster was a blocked shot from Mike Doyle and a weak shot by Mike Summerbee which was easily saved by the keeper. Then the goal came for the Welsh with Watford's, Tom Walley, who had started his career at Caernafon Town in 1963, and was captain for the day, scoring a dream goal. He picked the ball up from Lawther in the City half then dribbled through two attempted tackles before unleashing a 20 yard shot high into the net. The Blues were then under pressure further as Caernavon pushed forward several times before Tony Coleman on the break was inches wide with a 25 yard drive. There was plenty more goalmouth action, but the pitch was in a bad state and made the ball hard to control, indeed City players claimed the ball itself was actually out of shape, despite this the Blues went on to equalise in the second half.
