JOHN MADDOCKS WRITING IN THE CITY PROGRAMME 6TH JANUARY 1990 An icy Maine Road pitch made the going difficult when Burnley visited... Both teams adapted well to the conditions and only a masterly display by former City ‘keeper Peter Mellor saved Burnley from an embarrassing defeat. Showing splendid balance on the slippery surface, Bell and Lee bombarded Mellor's goal powerfully but the fair haired Mellor showed more than a passing resemblance to City legend Bert Trautmann. He slipped up only once, just before the break, coming too far from his line, and Lee punished his wanderings by whipping in a fierce drive. But it would have been an injustice to Burnley on the night had they lost and a goal by Dobson five minutes from the end saw the points shared.
