PETER GARDNER GIVES HIS VERDICT IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 12th October 1974 City battled magnificently at Turf Moor, where Alan Oakes had another superb match in a patched up side without five first-team regulars. Twice a goal down, the Blues were always full of adventure and endeavour with Mike Summerbee leading the line well, but at times lacking close support. City monopolised much of the well-fought contest, but never got the break in front of goal, where young England keeper Alan Stevenson made some fine saves. Colin Bell worked tremendously hard with Phil Henson in the middle and young Peter Barnes showed some exciting touches in a useful League debut. Jeff Clarke had another good match and it was a tragedy that he should concede a 60th minute own goal which gave Burnley a 2-1 win.
