… City played and lost to Bobby Robson’s sprightly Sporting when Cadete pounced on a monumental blunder by Terry Phelan.
Even then the organisers were not finished … and a penalty shoot-out was deemed necessary (despite City losing 1-0). Confusion reigned as the sun beat down on South Holland. The outcome of this was not certain either as the announcer ‘lost count’ midway through and told the bemused crowd “It doesn’t matter because Sporting won anyway”.
