A report by a local paper in January 1920, after he had played against Middlesbrough, just his fourth game for the club, gave some clue as to why he was so prized. Under the flattering, but less than catchy headline “MAX WOOSNAM’S BRILLIANT DISPLAY AT MANCHESTER”, the praise lavishly heaped on:
Nobody showed anything like the all round exellence of Max Woosnam.The famous amateur was the outstanding player on the field. His effectiveness was compatible with his boundless energy. Strong alike in attack and defence,he was always in the thick of the fray, and so far as I know, there is no half back so capable of taking the ball on the full volley and directing it with such accuracy.But in every respect Woosnam was masterly and it is unquestionable that his prescence, coupled with the successful return of Brennan that has brought about the very material improvement in the City team.
