John Scales last night moved a step closer to joining Wimbledon’s £2.5 million club following an impressive display in front of Liverpool chief scout Ron Yeats the cool Don’s defender hardly broke a sweat in this non-event in front Maine Road’s lowest crowd of the season, 19,524.
Manchester City defenders Keith Curle and Terry Phelan both left Sam Hammam’s club for British record fees totaling £5 million.
Scales will be next. Liverpool manager Graeme Sounesss has made him the central figure of his summer rebuilding plans.
Yeats left, surely satisfied by what he had seen, 17 minutes from the end, though he did miss City’s equaliser which came from substitute Rick Holden.
Wimbledon took the lead after 50 minutes, when Paul Miller’s rebound from John Fashanu’s shot off the bar was ruled over the line despite Tony Coton’s efforts.
With just six minutes left, substitute Rick Holden quietened the disgruntled Maine Road faithful with the equalizer, his half-hit shot fooling Don’s keeper Hans Segers.
