The League Champions, City faced the European Cup holders, United in the 79th Manchester league derby. The game ended goalless after an extremely defensive United employed spoiling tactics throughout. United’s John Fitzpatrick performed several crunching tackles on City midfielder Colin Bell. Afterwards the media focused on United’s negative play with one newspaper claiming that United’s defensive style proved their fear of the rather more attack minded City. This was the first time the Manchester Derby was shown on BBC’s Match of the Day
