JEFF HODGSON WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS FOOTBALL PINK FINAL 17TH JANUARY 1987 Master marksman Ian Rush put the skids under Manchester City at Maine Road this afternoon. Liverpool's Juventus-bound striker struck after 73 minutes just as the Blues looked set to collect a point after a gallant defensive battle. City, with 29 year old winger Peter Barnes back in the side, spent most of the game with their backs to the wall. Clive Wilson crowned another brilliant display by clearing off the line from Ronnie Whelan and keeper Perry Suckling pulled off a string of superb saves. But it all went wrong for City when Mark Lawrenson set up the winner for Rush. And that left City in big trouble in the First Division relegation zone.
