The normally immaculate Keith Curle cost Manchester City the chance of a top-six place at Elland Road.
The defender’s 11th minute slip allowed Leeds United striker David Rocastle in for the only goal of the match, and his first of the season.
Rocastle was left with time and space to volley home, and Blues’ keeper Tony Coton had to take his share of the blame for a strike that prevented City completing a double.
City boss Peter Reid had earlier dropped a bombshell by relegating Mike Sheron, 8 goals in 13 games, to the subs’ bench.
Sheron came on in the second half but failed to fire up the Blues.
