PETER GARDNER WRITING IN THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS 2ND AUGUST 1985 Manchester City must hope that Jim Melrose can carry his rediscovered scoring form into the new season. Yet the Blues will not lose sight of the fact that his first ever five goal scoring feat was plundered at the expense of a bunch of amateurs. He destroyed the host team as City ran up the competition's biggest score in the Isle of Man Tournament when a 6-1 win in Ramsey last night threw the Blues a slim lifeline for a place in tomorrow's final. ... Scoring hero Melrose was presented with the ball as well as a man-of-the-match award for his efforts which started in the seventh minute when he volleyed in a left flank Paul Power cross. David Phillips drove the ball in from the right for Melrose to steer in a 22nd minute looping header, and a minute from half-time Kenny Clements powered in a header from 12 yards following a corner from te left. There was a slight hiccup for the Blues when the locals scored from a twice taken 68th minute penalty. Alex Williams saved the first, but Chris Taggart, upended by Clements for the spot kick, made no mistake the second time. City stormed back with Melrose striking in 73, 81 and 83 minutes to complete the 6-1 victory romp.
