Black spot of this very dull draw came in the second half when a dart and a cigarette lighter were hurled at Joe Corrigan, fortunately missing him, and many felt it summed up the frustration the home fans had at watching the City ‘keeper make two more breathtaking saves. He touched over the bar a shot hammered from 10 yards by full back
McDonald and then made a superb leap to keep out a short-range header by Gillespie.
Defences were in charge and even the confident attempts by Dave Bennett to create something from the flanks did not produce a City breakthrough. ln fact, the only time ‘keeper Blyth had a serious save was in the 75th min. from a rocket shot by Steve Daley which he dashed out to fling himself at. ‘
Highlights of a tedious match was the display from Bennett, thoughtful moments from Steve Mackenzie, hard
running by Daley and the dominance of Tommy Caton.
City felt peeved about the denial of two penalty claims the first when Paul Power was brought down and then when Daley was tripped.
“The ground was really difficult, but l though we were the better team. We commanded the second half and should
have had at least one penalty” said City team manager Malcolm Allison later.
“We didn’t find it so easy against Caton, Mackenzie and Co, yet these lads are not only battling to establish themselves they are also fighting to overcome memories” opinioned Coventry manager Gordon Milne after.
