DAVID WHITE SCORES A BRACE

FROM THE PRESS BOX

MICHAEL WALKER WRITING IN THE OBSERVER 14TH FEBRUARY 1993
When 20 minutes from time, a fat balding intruder ran onto the pitch, it looked as though Barnsley had thrown in a surprise card; alas for the Yorkshiremen, he turned out to be a chump rather than trump. He, like all Barnsley efforts, was escorted safely away.
In truth it had never looked like being there afternoon. City were simply too strong, too quick and two inventive, which all added up to too much for Barnsley, who fought bravely throughout, without ever looking equipped to win.
They came with a five man defence in which Fleming was nominally sweeper, but even this number could not deny a City side growing in the belief that this is their year. ‘It’s meant to be,’ shouted one happy fan at the end.

The man who could take them to Wembley is David White, who scored both goals to bring this season’s total to 16. Neither matched his superb strike in the last round at Loftus Road, but never mind the quality feel the quantity.
His first, two minutes before the interval, proved vital. City had been camped in Barnsley’s half for some time without really threatening Butler in goal, there was only a header from Quinn which sailed wide when for once he had slipped his marker Taggart.
City had constantly tried to feed Holden, without much success, forcing the winger to drop deep. His past found the overlapping Phelan, whose cross was meatily by the oncoming White: his header was too powerful for Butler, who could only Parry it. White, continuing his momentum, walloped it home on the line.
His next, and the clincher, was also from about a yard. Having robbed Bishop, White moved in on Butler, but the keeper saved well. From the resulting corner, swung in swiftly by Holden, White Poked the ball in after it had eluded a clutch of players in the six-yard box.
Barnsley never recovered, and continued to rely on sporadic breakaways. It was this tactic which had brought their best chance on the half hour, when Currie’s first-time strike from the urchin-like Liddell’s cross was brilliantly saved by Tony Coton, TC, the Top Cat who had returned at the expense of Dibble.
